Under Georgia's Dexter Mosley Act (Senate Bill 42, 2021, codified at O.C.G.A. § 20-2-319.6), students enrolled in a home study program are eligible to participate in extracurricular and interscholastic activities at the Oglethorpe County school they would attend based on their home address. This includes athletics, band, chorus, drama, clubs, and academic competitions.

Participation is a partnership: a home study student represents OCSS and follows the same expectations as every other student on the team or in the club. The steps below explain who qualifies, what to submit, and when.

• Meet the same age, academic, behavior, conduct, discipline, residence, and zoning requirements as any OCSS student in that activity

• Follow the OCSS Student Code of Conduct and transportation rules

• Complete the tryout or selection process required of all students and provide any supporting documentation the school requires

• Pay any participation fees that apply to all students

• Enroll in and attempt one qualifying OCSS course each semester of participation (an on-site course, an OCSS-facilitated online course, or a dual enrollment course)

Within 30 days after the start of each school year, the administrator of each private school or Learning Pod home study program must provide the OCSS Superintendent a list of the name, age, and residence of every enrolled student who lives in the Oglethorpe County School System district. At the end of each month, the administrator must also notify the Superintendent of any student who has been suspended or unenrolled. See O.C.G.A. § 20-2-690(f), the Learning Pod Protection Act.
