The Governor’s Office of Student Achievement has released a list of schools that its office has considered low performing. We are still trying to gather all the information on why the high school is on this list, but here is what we do know:
This is a new list that the state has developed in response to SB 233 - The Georgia Promise Scholarship Act that provides families with state-funded scholarships to be used toward a non-public education (private education) of their choice - also known as the voucher bill.
When the state test scores were released in May, a list of Target Support and Improvement (TSI) Schools were released by the Georgia Department of Education. The schools on that list were those schools whose scores fell well below the state average. Oglethorpe County High School was not on that list.
Our high school graduation rate was exceptional this year, with 95.51% of our students graduating in 4 years. Our college preparedness score is above the state average, and our dual enrollment and Advanced Placement enrollment averages are all very good.
We firmly believe that our students at Oglethorpe County High School are getting an excellent education in a safe, caring setting. The high school administration and staff are continuously reviewing the school improvement plan to look for ways to strengthen specific areas. We recognize that improving the growth of the 9th graders’ achievement and closing the achievement gap of subgroups is an ongoing focus.
We will continue to focus on educating the whole child in a caring and nurturing environment and not base the success of our school on a single state test or on a rating. There is always more work to be done, and through our district's strategic plan, we will work on those areas that need improvement.
If you have any questions about the performance of our school, please do not hesitate to reach out to me.
